Are you getting a real or fake Christmas tree this year?

If you live in the Israeli City of Haifa, you don’t have a choice.  After a devastating forest fire that left 43 people dead and caused the evacuation of thousands of others this fall, the citizens were not sure about erecting a holiday tree.  But, designer Hadas Itzcovitch and her father had a great idea.  Why not create a green Christmas tree made from recycled bottles?

The fake Christmas tree, shown to the right, and in the first video below, illustrates both the spirit of the season and how we can create beauty from discarded items.  Created from nearly 5,500 plastic bottles, it took Itzcovitch and her family a month to build the Christmas tree.  They hope to raise awareness about environmental issues and the need to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Collecting over 6,000 plastic bottles from various locations around the city, the artist rejected many bottles because they contained advertisements.  The tree was finished using bottle caps to fasten the bottles together.

Check out the fascinating video below!

The Haifa Christmas Tree is not the only tree made from recycled bottles.  If you want to make your own, smaller version, watch this video:

Not into plastic bottles?  Even glass beer bottles can be used to create a beautiful “green” Christmas Tree:

If you haven’t already started collecting your beer bottles, we advise against downing cases of lager simply to build a Christmas Tree.

Enjoy your holiday season in a green (and responsible) way!
