New Mexico: The Land of Enchantment

I have often considered packing my things and moving to the Land of Enchantment -New Mexico. I would love to be surrounded by beauty and a sky that seems to warmly wrap itself around you. I wouldn’t mind leaving the cold New England winters behind me.

I read today that the Bureau of Land Management has made another distressing decision. It seems they are making one bad decision after another when it comes to protecting wildlife. The BLM has recently approved – ignoring years of widespread public opposition- oil drilling in Otero Mesa, located in Southern New Mexico. They have approved Otero Mesa for oil and natural gas development which will lead to the destruction of wildlife habitats and could contaminate vast reserves of groundwater.

They are going to allow drilling in Otero Mesa without proper study of the long term effects on the area and without putting in place best practices stipulations.

The residents in this area have spoken out on several occasions and view this land as their part of their heritage, which they want to protect. Otero Mesa is also home to the endangered Aplomado Falcon and is a wilderness unequalled in the Chihuahuan Desert.

Here are my 5 Reasons to stop the oil drilling in Otera Mesa. This time, I don’t even need any words to explain myself.

Two

Three

Five

The video above explains the question of drilling in Otero Mesa further.

Do you think it is worth it to destroy this beautiful land and it’s inhabitants for what will most likely be a very limited amount of oil and natural gas?
