Pennies For The Planet
Wildlife — By Amy on January 22, 2009 at 9:02 amThe upcoming educational fundraising campaign by the
National Audubon Society will allow families, classrooms and businesses across the nation to make a substantial difference in preserving wildlife.
Pennies for the Planet is program for motivating children to learn about and actively participate in protecting biodiversity by allowing them to collect change to support their favorite conservation project.
Audubon President John Flicker says this about the campaign:
“We need today’s communities to help nurture tomorrow’s environmental leaders, so it is vital that we help connect young people and families with the environment and provide ideas about how they can help protect it. Pennies for the Planet links environmental education with environmental action, giving people everywhere the chance to discover what it means to give back and to care for wild places in need of conservation attention.”
The Puffin Project is one of the three conservation projects that participants can support and learn about.
The Puffin Project on Eastern Egg Rock:
Four Holes Swamp is another conservation program that students can learn about and support through Pennies for the Planet. Four Holes is an ancient swamp and home to diverse wildlife and rare plants in South Carolina. Here are some clips of the swamp dwellers in their daily life:
This year, Pennies for the Planet is being funded by Together Green and Toyota. In the past, Pennies for the Planet has educated and aided tens of thousands of young people in raising thousands of dollars to protect habitats and support endangered species.
Pennies for the Planet hopes to reach 600,000 kids and families through their current campaign. They have partnered with Weekly Reader to bring the program into schools. They also provide a teacher’s guide to the campaign that includes posters, a children’s newsletter and participation forms with incentives and rewards programs for students.
If you are a parent of a school aged child, keep an eye out for this project in your local school or contact your child’s teacher to see if they will be participating this year.
Get involved yourself! Your children will love learning about and protecting these beautiful creatures and habitats!

This is a great program! I’ve known it through various environmental organizations over the years and am happy to see it housed at National Audubon Society now. I have seen kids get really excited about it; it’s a good way to help them feel like they can do something, and they see exactly where the money they raise is going. It’s perfect for Earth Day if anyone’s looking for ideas of a fun project to do with kids to celebrate.
