Disneynature's African Cats Movie Opens on Earth Day 2011 (image authorized by Disneynature)

An epic true story set against the backdrop of one of the wildest places on Earth, “African Cats” captures the real-life love, humor and determination of the majestic kings of the Savanna.

Narrated by Oscar®-nominated actor Samuel L. Jackson, the story features Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother’s strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mother of five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a rival lion and his sons. An awe-inspiring adventure blending family bonds with the power and cunning of the wild, “African Cats” leaps into theatres on Earth Day, April 22, 2011.

As the April 22 opening of the awe-inspiring “African Cats” approaches, Disneynature is tapping into the true power of social media by building awareness of its “See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna” program. During the film’s opening week (April 22-28), a portion of the proceeds from that week’s ticket sales will be donated to AWF through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor, a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the African savanna.
For more information about the movie and the “See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna” initiative, check out Disney.com/AfricanCats.

Here at Peachy Green, we are excited to announce an African Cats movie giveaway contest.  Simply comment on this post, including your email address, between now and 12:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on April 22, 2011 and tell us why you are excited to see African Cats!  United States residents only.

One (1) winner will be selected at random to win a copy of African Cats: The Kingdom of Courage: The Making of the Film coffee table book, compliments of Disneynature.  Winner to be announced on or before April 29, 2011.

Did you know that moviegoers have already bought $1.7 million in tickets to see the African Cats movie during its opening week (April 22-28) and save the African savanna in the process?

Thanks to the “See African Cats, Save the Savanna” initiative teaming up with the African Wildlife Foundation, Disneynature’s pledge to make a contribution in honor of everyone who sees the film opening week already translates to more than 9,500 acres of land within Kenya’s Amboseli Wildlife Corridor—and that number continues to rise.  This acreage of wildlife habitat preservation equates to 19 Disney’s Animal Kingdoms, or nearly two-thirds the size of Manhattan.

“The ‘See “African Cats,” Save the Savanna’ program transforms the movie going experience into tangible on-the-ground conservation action.

The film, which will be released in theaters worldwide, opens in North America on April 22, 2011. Tickets for groups of 20 or more are  available in the United States by calling 1-888-DISNEY6. Tickets are also available online at www.disney.com/africancats.

There are also a number of innovative online efforts underway that allow moviegoers to pledge their commitment to the film and in doing so, support the cause.

I think Disney did a great job making possible for this who can afford to go to Africa to be able to experience it at home with their family. I daughters always ask to put the next episode of earth or animal planet and their eyes get glued for hours. It really teaches your kids a lot! Thanks for this opportunity …good luck all

This will be a ‘touch of Africa’ for us. Africa is a wonderful place remains in your ‘blood’. I would encourage everyone to visit this amazing continent, and take a piece of it with you in your heart. You will treasure it forever. One day I will visit ….

Watching a movie about animals in their natural environment will be a wonderful experience. Most children are engaged when they see how animals interact in their environment. Looking forward to seeing the movie.

  13. Alex O says:

Ever since I was a little boy, Lions have always inspired me and motivated me to be such a strong person mentally. They are my favorite animal. They are so beautiful, so powerful, the fact that they are called the “Kind of the Jungle” just explains how amazing they are. I’ve read many books about them. I’ve seen so many documentaries about them. I want to watch the video so badly. Lions are my symbol of hope and strength. The fact that Disney decided to make such a documentary based on these beautiful creatures is absolutely fantastic. I know for sure that I’d rather go watch this video than any new movie coming out. The opportunity of winning is so exciting. Please, this would just be so amazing to me. Thank You.

  14. Stephanie says:

Alex, I really love wild cats, too. Growing up they were my favorite subject of a nature documentary. I think African Cats is going to be a great film. Good luck in the contest!

This movie looks so great! There was another really cool movie from National Geographic Pictures called “The Last Lions” which I believe is coming out on DVD soon. It is definitely worth a watch as well. Can’t wait to see this movie!

  18. Marshal K, says:

I am looking forward to this movie because:
1~The past 2 Disneynature films have been stunning
    2~I love the cinematography
3~I like how it is centered on 2 main families instead of the ENTIRE Ocean
4~I get to see the preview for next year’s film!

  19. Laura Trippe says:

Can’t wait to see this movie. Have had it on my calendar since February when I first saw the trailers.

  20. Dawn says:

I cannot wait to take my daughter who is 4 1/2 to see this on Friday. She LOVES animals and especially big cats like her mama. This will be the perfect outing for mom & daughter time. Thanks tons!

  21. Carol Knight says:

I’m so excited to see the movie, because I love cats, and have three of my own. One of the cats I found when it was only one week old and we named him Lucky. He truely believes he’s human. The other two were pet rescues.

In addition, I was born Aug 22nd, which makes me a Leo and my birth year is 1974, so in Chinese I’m a tiger.

My whole personality is cat like. I protect my three boys at whatever cost. I’m the bread winner of our family, just like with the female lions they hunt the food for their pride. I even love to nap in the afternoon and after a big meal.

Also, my dream would be to visit the African safari and see the cats up close. I’ve even been saving up for a trip to South Carolina where you can see the lions and their cubs up close (www.myrtlebeachsafari.com) and proceeds benefit the tiger reserve.

Lastly, my nickname is Tigger and my husband even calls be Tigger and has a tattoo of Tigger on his arm.

Please pick me!! I’m wild about cats, lions, and tigers.

  22. Ali Aslami says:

This will truly be a film that’ll inspire the world to save and help protect these wonderful creatures. It’s a terrible shame to see these cats n danger. I hope the proceeds from the tickets I purchase will make a difference! Cheers!

  23. Stephanie says:

Thanks Ali – I agree! I think its wonderful what Disneynature is doing to bring resources to this area of the world to preserve and protect the African Cats. Thanks and good luck!

  24. Stephanie says:

  28. Stephanie says:

    HI Noah,

We did a post about the Last Lions/National Geographic film earlier this year. Cannot wait to see that one. It would be great to compare it with African Cats. I’m sure that both documentaries are wonderful. Good luck!

  29. LL says:

The balance of nature is fragile. Destroying the environments in which these creatures live affects all living things. All of us, as the earth’s caretakers, urgently need to be more aware, and take better care, of all plants & animals. The always well produced Disney nature films will hopefully help us understand the importance of preserving nature.

  30. Natalie Stechmuller says:

I am sooo excited to see this movie… I have seen all of them so far and just can’t wait. I live in the Chicagoland area and would love for this film to be brought to the omni max theather at the muesume of Science and Industry….. All in all cant wait to see it Opening day Friday!!!!!

  31. Debbie Davids says:

I am so sad…I live in Nairobi, Kenya (where my husband is currently assigned), and some of the “Big Cats” in the documentary are our “Cats”, but I have not seen it advertised at our movie theater. It looks wonderful!! We have lived in Africa over 15yrs and spend as much time as we can in the bush and just watching and my husband photographing tons of wildlife. Nothing like it. We support all of the “Causes”, but especially the wildlife in Africa. I am in the middle of getting folks together to join us for the “Great Wildebeest Migration” in July. Come join us Trvl_Wmn@hotmail.com!!

  32. Connie says:

I am so excited about this movie because my children Just love animals in general. We love the Disney nature movies. My boys are especially into Cheetah’s and Lions so they are beyond excited about this movie!!!! Love Disney…

  33. Stephanie says:

  34. Stephanie says:

    Hi Debbie,

That’s too bad you won’t be able to see African Cats on its release date of April 22, but I hope you’ll be able to snag a DVD copy soon. Thank you for the great comment! I think your husband’s job sounds amazing!

  35. Stephanie says:

Hi Natalie – I agree, I’ll bet the film would look even more amazing on an IMAX screen. Hope you get your tickets for Friday’s opening of African Cats. Best to you and good luck

  36. Stephanie says:

Hi LL, you are right on. I applaud Disneynature for creating educational, entertaining nature documentaries that open our eyes to the challenges facing all creatures here on Earth. Hope you get to enjoy the African Cats film this weekend. Best!

  37. Valorie says:

I love to watch the real life drama on Animal Planet’s “African Cats” and can’t wait to see these felines on the Big Screen. Several friends from work and I plan on going this weekend.

  38. Sharon says:

This movie looks to be warm, endearing and motivating to everyone who sees it; especially the younger generation. Hopefully it will emphasize the plight of the big cats in Africa today. 50 years ago there were 450,00 lions, today, less than 20,000; 100 years ago there were 100,000 cheetahs, today less than 10,000. There are less than 50,000 leopards and there are more tigers in captivity than in the wild. We are only the stewards of this land to pass on to our children. For those of us lucky enough to stand on the Serengeti and hear the roar of a lion, it is impossible to think of this continent without its most iconic animal. The predators here are not the big cats; it is man and we are still in a position to change things. Hopefully this amazing film will touch the hearts of people and encourage them to maintain these remarkable animals for all future generations to come.

  39. Stephanie says:

Sharon, I do think that younger audiences will be motivated to help protect the planet and the habitat for African Cats through this amazing Disneynature documentary. The decline in numbers, as you point out, is quite disturbing. Don’t forget that if you see the movie during its initial release week, a donation will be made to help the Savannah. Best to you, Steph

  40. John says:

I am excited to see the journey the cats go through in life and death. I will also enjoy the scenery and expect to learn a few things about lions.

  41. Stephanie says:

    Hi John,

Disney does such a great job showing the realities of life for wild animals. I’m excited to see the film too. Happy Earth Day and good luck -Stephanie

  42. jerome says:

  43. jason fiske says:

The past year, I have taken my kids to the National Zoo, the local zoo, and watched many a specials on animals. I want to teach them the ways of the animals and how special they are to us. This movie will culminate my teachings.

  44. Gary says:

Ispend my days with sheep and domesticated cats. This movie looks great…big cats. My wife and I are going next week to see it.
