Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
One of our favorite holiday shows is the classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The 1964 classic stop-action animation television special features Burl Ives, an abominable snow monster with a tooth-ache, a skinny Santa, and – of course – Rudolph.
Poor Rudolph looks different than his peers. Even though he’s the best young flying reindeer, his friends laugh at his shiny red nose. In a fit of shame and embarrassment, Rudolph runs away and joins other mis-fits on a Siberia-like island.
It wouldn’t be a Christmas special without a happy ending, though. Through some trial and error, Rudolph finally figures out that his unique nose is an asset when he can light the way for Santa on a foggy Christmas Eve. Thank goodness for that little light beam!

Is it time to update the classic tale of Rudolph?
According to Wikipedia, the original 1964 classic has been re-made a few times over the years. I’m thinking that a new, 2009 version could feature an eco-friendly nose for Rudolph.
How about “Rudolph the LED-Nosed Reindeer”?
That’s right. Rudolph could go green with a new red nose. Do away with that incandescent bulb, and replace it with a solar LED (light emitting diode) light! LED bulbs have a life span of over 100,000 hours, which means that Rudolph could continue to guide Santa’s sleigh on foggy nights for many years to come.
Rudolph would have even more bragging rights, as he helps the entire North Pole reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions. I’m thinking that the new version could feature Rudolph leading a team that install LED Christmas lights on Santa’s workshop.
It would be another happy ending with Santa and Mrs. Claus opening their power bill and crying with delight at their reduced energy costs. Polar bears could wander by and thank the Clauses for reducing their carbon footprint. And the elves would dance with joy when they learn they won’t have to hassle with extension cords to light up the North Pole with solar LED lights.
Rudolph the LED-Nosed Reindeer – you’ll go down in history!
