Coal Attempts Cool

Cool Coal?
Like the tobacco companies in the 90’s, the coal industry is trying to look cool and cute. They are literally attempting to put a fun face on their unhealthy, environmentally dangerous product.
This picture was part of a full page add that ran in the Washington Post on January 13. It is meant to be a delightful little distraction from the facts.
Coal is not and has never been clean.
Are we really supposed to look at that lump and say “aw, how cute?” Is the reflection of the blue sky on the lenses intended to make us think of clean air and happiness? Is the American public really that gullible?
I can’t answer that.

Joe Camel
See the similarities between this campaign and Joe Camel, the cartoon smoker designed to appeal to the younger generation?
Just like Joe Camel, this sunglasses wearing lump of coal is meant to deceive the public. And there is nothing cool about that.
No matter how you dress it up, coal is still the filthiest way to produce electricity.
Don’t be fooled! Learn more about the Reality of coal.

How ridiculous! Coal is not cool and the sky in the sunglasses is a joke. Glad you pointed this out in your post. Hopefully, a lot of people find this post and become aware / consious of how manipulative some ads can be. All the best to you!
Can you even believe it! Even when I revisit this post, I get mad again. I appreciate your comment, and let’s hope that the public is way smarter than “Joe Coal.”
Best, Stephanie
Let’s hope they don’t pull of this stunt. Great insight!
