Halloween is not my favorite holiday. Not at all. Maybe it’s because of a Halloween related trauma I suffered as a child (I was a little scaredy-cat) or maybe it’s the fact that I’m allergic to chocolate (now that’s a tragedy in itself). Either way, my oldest daughter drags me through the Halloween shop every year begging for all kinds of scary lawn decorations that make me cringe.
A Green Halloween is the only solution I can come up with to get out of buying this junk. (Am I mean or what?) I’m kidding, of course. We don’t need anymore of the stuff because my husband gave in and bought a whole bunch of it last year. And then he wouldn’t take down the light-up bats until sometime after Thanksgiving, when it was time to put up the Christmas decorations. They are currently hidden away in the basement. I can’t seem to remember where I put them…
So the big question for my daughter is “What am I going to be this year?” She started planning on November 1st of last year and has changed her mind at least a dozen times. She has taken well to the idea of Green Halloween, but will not sacrifice costume style. You know, she is almost 9 years-old, and that is practically a teen. Or so she tells me. At the moment, she is planning on going as an endangered animal…I can’t remember which one at the moment…but she has a plan.
She was really disappointed when I said it would be unlikely that I could get her one of these all electric cupcake cars to wear as her Green Halloween costume. Unfortunately, there just aren’t enough of them to go around. Even I would get into one of these to cruise the neighborhood on Halloween night. How fun would that be to pull up to my cranky neighbor’s house and jump out of a cupcake car?

Have you seen the site http://www.GreenHalloween.org? It’s a really cool resource for parents, schools and organizations planning Halloween events.
The founder of Green Halloween also has another site - http://www.CelebrateGreen.net - for how to celebrate green all year ’round.

Hi Kate,
Thanks so much for suggesting that site! There is a wealth of information there to help us all have a green Halloween. I love that it is broken into sections for parents, kids and schools. Great info - thanks again!
