Eco-friendly craft projects from eco-friendly felt

If you grew up in scouts (like I did), chances are you probably made a few felt projects in your youth!

Today, there’s a greener felt that you can use for eco-friendly felt projects for kids of all ages.

Eco-fi (previously known as Ecospun) felt is a versatile textile that is created from 100% certified recycled plastic bottles.  Plastic fibers from recycled plastic can be used in clothing, carpeting, blankets, wallpaper, auto interiors and even felt for craft projects!

The eco-friendly felt is made as follows:

  • Recycled plastic bottles are sorted by color and type at recycling centers
  • Labels are stripped, bottles crushed and their chopped into flake
  • The flake is then melted and extruded into fiber strips, which are baled
  • The baled fiber can be processed into fabric for a number of uses, described above!

When the cloth from recycled plastic is made into Eco-fi felt, the stage is set for you and your children to create lovely felt bookmarks, felt flower magnets, a felt/fabric picture frame, or some of the other interesting crafts shown in the videos below!

Embroidered Felt Bookmarks

  • At least 18″ x 6″ of eco-friendly felt
  • Cardstock
  • Fabric glue or hot glue gun
  • Embroidery needle and thread
  • ribbon
  • hole punch
  • iron
  • iron-on patch (optional)

First, cut 2 pieces of felt, about 8.5″ by 2.5″ in size.  Cut out a piece of cardstock about 8″ x 2″.  On the front side of the bookmark (one of the pieces of felt), embroider a name or word (love, peace, green).  If you would like to add an iron-on patch position as desired and iron.  Turn over the first piece of felt, center the cardstock on the back and glue.  Take the second piece of felt and sandwich the cardstock between the felt.  Embroider a border around the edges of the bookmark.  Using a hole punch, make a small hole at the top of the bookmark and thread the ribbon through and tie with a knot.

Adorable felt flower magnets

Felt Flower Magnets

  • eco-fi felt, cut into a number of flower shapes and sizes
  • vintage buttons
  • small magnets (you can find at craft stores)
  • hot glue gun
  • embroidery needle and thread

First, you’ll need to create some flower shapes with your eco-friendly felt.  Use different colors and shapes for interesting layering.  Next, select a few felt flowers to layer together.  Secure them by stitching in the center.  On the front, hot glue a cute button in the center of the flower.  Then, flip over and glue the magnet on the back.

Crafty Felt Picture Frame

  • wood picture frame of your desired size and shape
  • eco-friendly felt flowers (as created above)
  • fabric remnants – upcycle old or worn clothing!
  • hot glue gun
  • decorative buttons
  • ribbon
  • embroidery thread and needle

Cut a piece of fabric that is at least 1.5 inches larger than the size of the frame.  Hot glue the fabric to the front of the frame, pulling it tight around the edges.  Cut an “x” in the fabric in the center of the frame.  Pull back the fabric in the middle to create the opening and hot glue it to the back of the frame.  Smooth out any wrinkles before glue dries.

Take your eco-felt flowers and layer them together.  Stitch together with needle and thread and then hot glue a cute button in the middle.  Arrange your flowers on the frame as desired and then hot glue them in place.  If you want to hang your picture frame, hot glue two ends of ribbon or twine to the back.

If you have any other easy felt projects to share, please do!  Eco-friendly felt is a perfect material to use when you’re feeling crafty!
