Heading to America's Greenest School

Does your child attend America’s Greenest School?  Well, I can’t be the judge of that, but there is a contest going on for kids, parents, teachers and guardians, that runs through April 30.  Considering that Earth Day is April 22, let’s keep the positive environmental focus going!

Enter right here:  www.americasgreenestschool.com

Write an essay about how your school has implemented eco-friendly practices, whether recycling, using renewable energy, or through special programs (observance of Earth Day, for example!)  Or, you can simply enter at the website for entry in the contest, without showing off your writing skills.

If you are less than 13, your parents will have to submit the essay on your behalf.  The only other restriction is that you have to be a resident of one of the 50 states.  Not surprisingly, you can only enter your own written materials (no copying!)

Tell us how you, your teacher, your school, or your friends are making a commitment to go green, or why your school deserves to be named America’s Greenest School!

For some inspiration, check out last year’s America’s Greenest School contest on Ellen:

On the way to America's Greenest School

For the current contest, prizes include a $5,000 scholarship (for the best essay), $3,000 in school supplies and….. a hybrid school bus for the winner’s school district.  Not only can riding the bus save lots of fuel and money (an average $663 per year per student and family), but a hybrid school bus will use less fossil fuel, multiplying the positive environmental effects of taking the bus.  How cool would that be to win a hybrid bus for your schools?

My 3rd and 5th graders will both write essays, to be submitted by me on their behalf.  After the April 30 cut-off, judging and then voting will occur through May.

With plenty of green schools and programs here in Bend, Oregon, there is lots of material with which they can work.  It would be great to see our region highlighted in the contest.

What would your kids say about their district?  Do they attend America’s greenest school?  I dare you to find out!

Love this idea! My oldest will be starting kindergarten this fall and, when we figure out where she’ll be attending (long story), we will be finding out how green the school is!

    Thanks for another wonderful post!
