Tiny Footprint Coffee: Promoting Reforestation in Ecuador
Going green — By Stephanie on February 11, 2011 at 6:52 amThere are many ways for coffee companies to be “green” these days, including organic and fair trade, shade-grown beans. But Tiny Footprint Coffee has taken sustainable coffee a step further than most. Billing itself as “carbon negative,” the coffee company is promoting reforestation in Ecuador. Here’s how it works:
Tiny Footprint Coffee calculates that the CO2 that is produced through the growing, harvesting, shipping, roasting and packaging of 1 pound of its coffee beans is about 4 pounds. So, it donates funds for the planting of trees in Ecuador’s Mindo Cloudforest that will absorb about 54 lbs of carbon from the atmosphere. The end result is 50 pounds of carbon neutrality that makes for an extra warm feeling from your cup of Joe!
In addition to tree planting in the rain forest, donations to the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation will help protect endangered bird species and create jobs for local farmers in the region.
Tiny Footprint Coffee was founded by Alan and Brian Krohnke in Minneapolis, MN. They roast the coffee in small batches that helps cut down energy use, but ensures a delicious, consistent roast. Tiny Footprint is organic, 100% Arabica bean and shade-grown. When you enjoy this high quality, sustainable coffee, you’ll also know that you are helping reforestation in Ecuador’s Mindo Cloudforest.
