The Java Log: Eco-Friendly Fire
Going green — By Amy on December 16, 2008 at 9:00 amIf you have been hanging around Peachy Green long enough, you surely know that we love, love, love coffee. I freely admit that I am a coffee addict. I could not help but giggle when I came across this excellent green option for my fireplace this winter. The Java Log!
Winter is upon us here in New England and there are few things I enjoy as much as sitting by a warm fire with a very large cup of sustainable coffee. It is only recently that I thought about the environmental impact of this favorite winter hobby of mine.
Burning wood is not all that friendly to the environment. We don’t purchase seasoned firewood (although many people in our area do). A tree falls in our yard at least once a year for us to use and there are usually enough branches laying around to supply plenty of kindling. Still, burning wood releases pollution into the air.
The Java Log, created by the Canadian based Jarden Home Brands, is made from coffee grounds. It costs a little more (than scavenging for fire wood) but the benefits may just be worth it! Jarden HOme Brands mission as it appears on their website:
To research, develop and manufacture technologies and products which “close the loop” in production and consumption, by reusing spent coffee ground waste product.
Here are some great reasons for you to try out this eco-friendly fire option:
- Made from all renewable materials.
- Java Log is non-toxic
- NOT petroleum based
- Doesn’t cause ozone depletion.
- It produces 87% less carbon monoxide than wood
- The Java Log produces a wood crackling sound and will burn up to 3 hours.

The Java Log: An Eco-Friendly Fire
I have one very important question and I won’t be able to answer this until I try it out for myself – how does it smell? I love how a natural wood fire smells. In fact, that is as much of a treat as the fire itself.
Will it fill my home with the smell of fresh coffee? It doesn’t really need to. My house smells like a coffee shop most of the time anyway!
One last benefit: the Java Log is lightweight and easy to start. I don’t have to wait for my big, strong, bonfire building man to come home and get it started for me!
I’m not that much of a princess. I really can get a regular fire going all by myself. Now that I can have an eco-friendly fire so easily, you may not hear from me for awhile.
I’ll be sitting by my Java Log fire with my java.
Locate a store in your area that sells the Java Log so you can have an eco-friendly fire this winter too!

Unfortunately, it does NOT smell like coffee. Fortunately, it also does not have that terrible waxy, chemical smell that most logs have. Java logs tend to be more expensive than the other ones and often hard to find in C.O. If you see them on sale, snag a bunch and also at the end of the season.
FWIW, some very good info on how to build a “green fire” with regular wood:

Personally I do not think they are that bad. Find the files you are looking for at f-torrents.com the most comprehensive source for free-to-try files downloads on the Web
