Call me shallow if you like, but the first thought that ran through my mind at the mention of putting solar shingles on my home was fear. Fear of humiliation, to be exact. Just how stupid is this going to look? I had a flashback to the 80’s mocking of a neighbor’s tiny home with enormous solar panels. It was the talk of the neighborhood. There was really no way around it; the panels looked bad. So many years later I am still wondering about the aesthetics of harnessing the power of the sun on my own roof. This is my home after all. I don’t want it to look like it’s wired for alien communication. Yes, the idea of it is great, renewable energy, blah, blah, blah, but is my house going to be used as a landmark when giving directions?

“Take a left when you see the stupid looking house with the roof that looks like giant take-out tray. Yeah, you know the one….It’s right next to the house with the graveyard.”

These were my initial concerns. You see, I live in a very friendly neighborhood. You know the kind where everyone pretends to be friends? My neighbor complains about my dog in the sweetest way to my face, but if my pup dares to reach one paw over the property line she’s got the animal control van in my driveway in a flash. To be fair, I make the occasional snide comment about her garden statuary.

What was my point? Oh yes, how do these solar shingles look? Are you scared to see….common take a peak. You will be pleasantly surprised! I sure was.

The solar shingles are actually pretty cool and will drive the lady next store to wonder, what the heck are they doing over there now? Is it against the law? Then she will surely get all puffy when she realizes I am doing something good for the environment. I beat her to it. My house is greener than hers. She will be emerald with envy. Maybe she will even get some solar shingles for her garden tombstones. I mean statues.
