Can you believe 2009 is nearly at an end? Its time to ring in 2010… as we like to say… Green in the New Year!
If you are hosting or attending a New Years Eve party, consider these tips for a green celebration. There will be less clean-up afterwards, less cost, and no compromise on fun!
1. Instead of confetti or fireworks, get a large container of bubbles (or make your own using dishwashing soap and water). Children of all ages (0-99) will enjoy! Watch the fireworks on T.V., instead of setting off your own.
2. Don’t purchase flimsy, cheap hats – make your own with scraps of paper, newspaper and then have your guests add some personality with stickers or glue. Alternatively, you can make your own 2010 glasses, instead of purchasing the plastic options:
3. Keep it simple. Oftentimes, party hosts put out too much food and drink, resulting in a lot of waste at the end of the night. Select 3-4 appetizers, and serve 2 types of drinks, plus at least 1 non-alcoholic choice. Sparkling cider is a delicious option, and it saves you the embarrassment of making New Year’s resolutions you’ll never be able to keep (at least some of the time!)
4. While you are planning your menu, consider using washable plates, silverware and glassware. Paper and plastic should not be invited to your party! Cloth napkins will also help minimize clean-up.
5. Look ahead to the New Year, and see if your celebration style matches your hopes and goals for the future. Party in a sustainable manner, minimizing waste while maximizing fun!
That’s what its all about in 2010!

Great tips! Cool idea on the bubbles. I could just see bubbles floating down from the ceiling rather than confetti – much easier to clean up too.

I agree that the bubbles would be much more fun – and no sweeping after midnight!
Happy New Year!
