Earth Day 2009

Tomorrow is the 39th annual Earth Day.  Each year, since April 22, 1970, we’ve taken one of 365 days to think about our fragile planet, and how we can preserve and protect it.  Just one day.  Is that enough?

For Earth Day 2009, things are looking a bit different than they did in 1970.  Sure, there were some concerns about the price of gasoline, but global warming is a phrase that had not yet been coined, and Al Gore was just getting warmed up to serve in the House of Representatives (he was elected first in 1977).

But today, we are facing undeniable global climate change.  From melting glaciers to bleaching coral reefs, rising tides to dying forests.  The signs are all there…. and they point to us.  What kind of planet will we be leaving for our kids to inherit?

Let's pass on a clean, green earth

We don’t have the luxury of time to continue contemplating our future.  The time to act is now.  Every little bit that you can do to reduce your carbon footprint, from changing your lightbulbs to compact florescent bulbs to using canvas shopping bags is helpful.  But why not push yourself a bit more?

Try walking to your child’s school to pick him or her up.  Adjust your thermostat a few degrees further (you can tolerate it, trust me).  Consider taking advantage of the generous federal and state tax incentives for renewable energy projects, including solar and wind.

It may be an Inconvenient Truth to think about where we are as a world-wide community, but the good news is that we are paying attention, and we can make… and we are making a difference.

What are you doing differently on Earth Day 2009, compared to a year ago?  What are your plans for the next 12 months?
