How safe is your cell phone?

Could the radiation from your cell phone be harmful to your health? It seems the jury is out on this one, because there is really no way to know for sure what 20 years of daily cell phone use could do to your brain.

Remember back in the early 90’s when there were all kinds of news reports that cell phones caused brain tumors? It became a bit of a joke, because most of us didn’t own them and we liked to make fun of the people who did.

Or was that just me?

Well, there are still cell phone safety issues to consider. There are already people who claim that the heat from their cell phones give them headaches and other symptoms. There are also quite a few products on the market that claim to block the radiation.

Radiation advisory boards in several European countries, including France, Austria and Sweden,  have recommended that their citizens reduce exposure by using the hands free option and not storing their cell phone close to their bodies.

In this video, our host from the Ontario Science Center discusses how there have not been any conclusive studies indicating that cell phone exposure is dangerous. He does point out, however, that some cancers take 10, 20 or 30 years to develop and we simply don’t know what long term extended use of cell phone could do to our bodies. He suggests some ways to play it safe if you are concerned.

My young daughter is already asking for a cell phone. I don’t think she has any use for it at this point and I can put her off for another year or two. But will there be any more definitive information then? Would you give your kid a cell phone if there was a chance it could harm them in some way?
