Eco-friendly yarn for your holiday knitting projects
Looking for eco-friendly yarn for your holiday knitting projects? There is a wide variety of environmentally sound “green” yarns from which to choose these days. Organic textiles are booming as demand increases.
Here’s a guide to 8 great quality eco-friendly yarns. Why not create a cozy sweater for your boyfriend or crochet a cute baby blanket for your best friend? Homemade gifts like these are especially appreciated over the holidays.
Or, maybe you just want to earn some extra holiday cash selling your projects at craft websites like Etsy.com? Either way, take your pick among these eco-friendly yarns:
- 100% Organic Marino Yarn. Made from 100% certified organic wool and processed in compliance with the Organic Trade Association’s Fiber Processing standards. Find it at nearseanaturals.com.
- 100% Organic Cotton. This green yarn is spun from organic cotton – no chemicals used in growing or harvesting the crops and colored with natural dyes. Get it at purlsoho.com.
- Soysilk Yarn. Spun from renewable soy proteins, this eco-friendly yarn is soft, warm and even wicks away moisture! Purchase at soysilk.com. Not to be confused with…
- Seasilk Yarn. This unique fiber is made using fiber created from seaweed and silk. Hand-dyed colors and a silky appearance makes this one beautiful yarn. Check out earthfriendlyyarns.com, or visit their retail store in Seattle, Washington.
- Hemp Yarn. Considered to be one of the best renewable resources in the world, hemp is durable and strong. Create lasting pieces with this eco-friendly yarn. Shop at lanaknits.com for hemp yarn.
- Recycled Silk Sari Yarn. Spun in Nepal with scraps of leftover silk cut to create saris, this green yarn is colorful and beautiful. Get it at nearseanaturals.com.
- Bamboo Yarn. Spun from 100% bamboo – which is quite possibly the most versatile, sustainable crop – this yarn is beautiful and drapes nicely. Find it at soysilk.com.
- Recycled Cigarette butt yarn. OK, so you can’t purchase this yarn for your homemade knitting projects yet. But, we did just blog about it last week. Can you believe the creative, eco-friendly textiles created from items like cigarette butts?

A rainbow of colors of eco-friendly yarn
There are so many amazing projects you can make with eco-friendly yarn. I’m thinking a cozy hemp blanket is just the thing to take the chill off here in cold Central Oregon!
Happy Holidays!

Great post Steph! I love all the natural / eco yarns on the market. Bamboo is my favorite (of course), but there is nothing like a handmade cozy merino scarf!
The natural materials are so much nicer to work with too.
Thanks Amy – its so nice how many eco-friendly yarns there are to choose from! Bamboo is nice and soft. Cheers to you! Steph
