It’s a spa industry first. Recess in West Hollywood is providing upscale, luxury services as the country’s first completely eco-friendly nail spa.

Recess is LAs first green nail spa.

Recess is LA's first green nail spa.

Wouldn’t you appreciate walking into a nail spa or hair salon that didn’t assault you with it’s chemical filled air? I admit, it’s been a while since I’ve had a mani/pedi and part of the reason is the headache triggering fumes found in the common nail spa. As a mom of three, I also don’t have much time to hang around and get my nails done. If I was offered an hour at an eco-friendly nail spa, I think I could rearrange my schedule.

This eco-friendly nail spa uses nail care products and polish that are safe for their clients, employees and the environment. Here is a quick breakdown of just a few of the poisons found in standard nail polishes and other nail care products.

  • Toluene: A nervous system toxin.
  • Di butyl phthalate (DBP): This one has less than desireable effects on the male reproductive system.
  • Formaldehyde: An known carcinogen, exposure (especially prolonged) can be detrimental to your lungs, eyes and throat. (* note: also found as a filler in laundry detergents and fabric softeners, some cosmetics, some vaccines)

Eco-friendly nail spas are a breath of fresh air!

At Recess, they are committed to using only all natural, safe nail care products. They even created their own product line to share with their clients. The Recess spa is designed green – it’s energy efficient and was built with eco-friendly building materials.

Is this just a way for them to get a little extra business in the highly competitive Los Angeles spa market? Probably. But who cares. It’s still the right thing to do. It’s better for the environment and healthier for their customers and employees.

Whether it can compete with the rest of the LA upscale spa’s, only time can tell. Getting a mani/pedi at a totally green nail spa could be the next hot LA trend. And while Recess may be the first eco-friendly nail spa, I’m sure it won’t be the last.
