Creative Green Halloween Costumes
Going green, Green kids — By Stephanie on October 11, 2010 at 11:55 amHalloween is just 20 days away, and that’s enough to give many parents a fright! With 4 kids of my own, buying costumes each year can get expensive. That’s why we love these creative green Halloween costumes. They are easy on the wallet and you won’t have to worry about whether that polyester-based cape or tutu is biodegradable when your child outgrows (or loses interest) in it.
Halloween is about fun and creativity. Do you and your kids want to look like every other trick-or-treater on the block? Don’t you want to show up at your annual Halloween party with a really unique costume?
Consider these eco-friendly costume ideas this year instead:
There are many websites that have instructions on how to make creative green Halloween costumes. Most often, the outfits require household materials, some duct tape or light sewing, and maybe a little makeup. Here are our favorite sites:

Easy costumes like these require little investment of time or money
Craft websites like etsy.com also offer quality homemade Halloween costumes made from eco-friendly materials, instead of cheap polyester. Not only are you helping the environment, but you are also contributing to the success of these crafty entrepreneurs.
You can also get creative using old sports uniforms or dance recital costumes that your children already own. For a scary look, add white theater face paint and blood (zombie first baseman, anyone?) Borrow or make your own wig. You can even mix and match pieces from previous years’ costumes (add devil horns and tail to your pink ballerina tutu!)
As an alternative, kids love to borrow from mom and dad’s closet. Let them create a silly outfit using your clothes and accessories. You’ll be surprised at what they come up with!
Finally, if you simply don’t want to try these easy-to-make Halloween costumes, you can still have a green holiday by heading to your local Goodwill or thrift store, or by hosting a costume swap.
Call a few friends and make an afternoon or evening of it. Everyone brings old costumes and exchanges them for new ones. You might even get some fresh ideas for unique costumes.
Have a fun green Halloween. Hope you scare up a great, eco-friendly costume!

I have to admit that the child in the photo at the top of the article does not look too impressed with his own costume, haha!
Isn’t that the truth! Dressing up babies (and pets) is usually more fun for the adults.
Even though the official National Green Halloween Costume Swap Day has past I believe there are still some people having events. Check the website to see if there is one near you. If not, it’s still a good resource for ideas from snacks to costumes – http://www.GreenHalloween.org.
You can probably also have a private party of friends and neighbors get together to costume swap items.
Other ideas… Thrift stores really are a treasure trove of costume ideas and accessories. I have found some of my absolute favorites at thrift stores.
