The Ford C-Max Plug-in Hybrid at NAIAS 2011

Earlier this month, I attended the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.  The mood was upbeat, as auto manufacturers were feeling positive and people are starting to buy cars again.  In fact, if there is one word to describe the show, its “electric.”

While 100% electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf are starting to pick up traction in the press and among consumers, plug-in hybrid electric cars (which run on battery power until depleted and then switch to gasoline) allow people to put aside “range anxiety,” while improving gas mileage and reducing CO2 emissions.

From the giant showroom in Detroit, its obvious that there will be many plug-in hybrids to choose from soon.

Here’s a preview of EVs from Ford Motor Company:

If you are like me, and concerned about rising gas prices, perhaps its time to consider one of these PHEVs:

  • The Ford Energi, a plug in hybrid that can seat 7 (5 adults and 2 children) with a 500-mile range (coming in 2012)
  • The Chevy Volt, voted 2011 “North American Car of the Year“; You can get a Volt today, and GM will more than double its production this year from 10,000 to 25,000 vehicles
  • GM will be coming out with a PHEV version of the Cadillac SRX crossover car in 2012 or 2013; the vehicle will combine features of a minivan and hatchback
  • Toyota now has an entire family of Prius vehicles, which includes a Plug-In Prius arriving in showrooms in early 2012.
  • Next year, you’ll be able to buy a Honda PHEV in the U.S. and Japan, based on its Inspire sedan model.
  • China-based BYD plans to bring its its S6DM PHEV crossover to the U.S. next year.
