Honda's 3R-C concept vehicle

When it comes to 21st century urban transport, there are several key factors that consumers demand: (1) fuel efficiency, (2) modern design and (3) compact size.  Honda’s new single occupancy electric vehicle, the 3R-C boasts all three.

Although it will be officially unveiled next month at the Geneva Motor Show, the Honda 3R-C is already generating buzz… and its not just because its an electric vehicle!  The tiny transporter is a miniscule three-wheeler, which only has room for a driver, and runs on an electric-powered battery.  According to the official press release:

This revolutionary three wheeled battery electric vehicle concept shows what a future minimal urban transport vehicle for one person might look like. The battery electric drivetrain is mounted low in the three wheeled chassis, therefore keeping the centre of gravity low and thus improving stability.

The 3R-C has a clear canopy that covers the driver’s seat while it is parked and not in use. When 3R-C vehicle is in motion, the canopy becomes an enveloping wind-shield that provides the pilot, who sits low in the vehicle, with significant protection from the bodywork and doors.

The high sides of the safety shell seat give greater safety to the occupant, reducing the threat from side impacts and improving weather protection. In front of the driver is a lockable boot area, which gives significant secure storage for luggage or other items. The 3R-C’s designers created a flexible cover that surrounds the upper torso to reduce exposure to bad weather and improving comfort.

Honda ushers in a new generation of EVs

Can you imagine tooling around town in one of these?  It makes the SmartCar look downright huge!

Honda is breaking new ground – at least when it comes to the major automakers.  Similar concepts to the 3R-C have been floated around by independent designers in the past.  But there haven’t been any “bites,” so to speak, from car manufacturers that could actually bring such a concept to market.

Admittedly, we’ll probably wait a few years before this (or something similar) is available to consumers.  But its refreshing to see Honda – and others – taking seriously consumers’ desires for compact, zero-emissions vehicles.

Pretty cool actually! Glad to see it has some storage space too…could be a good way to dash around town doing errands, rather than taking the “big car”.

  2. Stephanie says:

I thought so too. The design is a little too futuristic for my tastes, but I love the concept. Way to go Honda!

Looks pretty slick. I’d ride one!
